Camp Day 4

It's HOT outside.  There's no way around it.  Our motivation is strong, but the heat has taken our morale down a notch.  We have to dig deep to stay on target with our goals for the week.  Tyler's shirt is inspirational on a day like today...

Setting drill looks alot like this.....
While Mr. Reynolds does alot of this....
When we took a water break, these were the only smiles we could muster...
Here is a cool move we learned in fundamental block to help prepare us for a challenging move in the opener.

Chad, Becky, and Mr. Reynolds gave us some encouragement in our huddle right before our morning break...
Ms. Craven knew our spirits needed a little lifting, so she brought out her role of masking tape and we played a game called "STICKY BEAK."
The object is to stick a tape loop on the end of your nose and use that tape loop to acquire other tape loops from other noses without using your hands.  It brought us closer together!
Taylor emerged victorious with the biggest tape nose at the end of the game.

Camp Day 3

We started our day with a review of marching fundamentals on the field.
Then, we FINALLY began setting the drill to our first piece.  We set SEVEN pages today, which is awesome.  The rookies really caught on quickly!
The FLUTE TRIO doesn't march much during the first few pages, but don't they look nice just standing around!
There is alot of "follow the leader" drill in the opener and Dolan is our line leader.  This is his "leader" face!
Cheyanne makes holding an imaginary bass drum look so easy.
This is page ONE of the show.
Here is the drill in action!

Camp Day 2

We moved to the practice field on Day 2 and began perfecting our "8 to 5" marching.  Click HERE to see more images from Day 2.

Band camp hasn't been all work this week.  Each day, we have made time for some fun games and team building activities.  Here is some footage of the "Dollar Jump" game in which band members try to jump over a dollar bill while holding on to their toes.  If they are successful and land on their feet, they get to keep the dollar.  Ms. Craven lost $7 in this game!

Band Camp 2011 - Day 1

Full band camp began today at Sun Valley High School.  This year's show is called "Boo!" and it is based on music from In the Hall of the Mountain King.  Chad and Becky, the drum majors at Gardner Webb University, are the marching instructors for camp this year.  They are helping us make some improvements to our basic marching technique this year so camp began with a THOROUGH review of attention, parade rest, marking time, and the step off.  We are also working on building our mental and physical strength.  The focus, discipline, and determination in the block today were very impressive.  Check out these images from Day 1.

Becky puts the band through the paces with some strength training.
If a band member drops their arms, the exercise goes on LONGER!
We have updated our "attention" position this year and now our toes make a "V" shape.
This is what our feet look like in the "parade rest" position.
We keep our water close because it's HOT HOT HOT!!!

The first step is always the most important.  Toes up!
